Existing Site Conditions
Mt. Madonna Continuation High School is composed of a mix of permanent and portable classroom buildings that support core academic programs as well as administrative functions. The campus includes administrative and principal offices, general education classrooms, a wellness classroom, student and staff restrooms, and a centrally located multi-purpose room with an adjoining kitchen. A state-funded preschool sits adjacent to the campus along Farrell Avenue, with its own classrooms, restrooms, and dedicated playgrounds. The site also houses the Gilroy Elevate Learning Center and other support facilities.
Overall, the campus remains functional, but facilities show signs of aging and do not fully support high school–level needs—particularly in restroom design, athletic amenities, and CTE program spaces.
Site & Outdoor Areas
The site is organized around permanent and portable buildings positioned near the campus center, with a large asphalt play yard situated at the rear, an area originally designed for elementary school use. The play yard pavement is cracked, uneven, and poorly drained, with faded striping and missing or damaged basketball hoops and nets.
A small central quad provides limited outdoor gathering space, but shading is minimal and currently achieved through temporary pop-up tents and small planter trees.
Parking is distributed along the Wren Avenue and Farrell Avenue frontages and includes a drop-off zone at the administration entrance. The parking areas are in deteriorating condition, with worn asphalt, faded markings, noncompliant ADA stalls, and unclear wayfinding.
Campuswide internet connectivity is unreliable and frequently disrupts instruction.
Classroom Building & Portables
Classrooms support both general education and CTE programming, including culinary arts, after-school arts, bookmobile, and gaming programs. Conditions range from fair to poor. Interior spaces include worn carpet and VCT flooring, outdated vinyl wall coverings, and suspended acoustic ceilings.
Classrooms feel undersized and rely on outdated, non–size-inclusive furniture that does not accommodate the needs of older or larger students. Built-in casework is functional yet dated.
Portable classrooms located along the site perimeter show weathered exteriors and aging ceilings but provide good natural light, adequate casework, and accessible ramps and walkways.
Restrooms
Student restrooms are distributed along the permanent classroom wings and are accessible from both interior corridors and outdoor paths. Interior tile surfaces display wear, staining, and deterioration. Lighting levels are low, with several malfunctioning sensor fixtures. Fixtures such as sinks and stalls were originally designed for younger students and are not appropriately sized for high school users.
While staff restrooms remain adequate, student restrooms require modernization to meet current standards for accessibility, durability, and age-appropriate use.
Multi-Purpose Room & Administration Building
The multi-purpose room and administration suite are centrally located, with classroom wings extending outward. The multi-purpose room features colorful VCT flooring, a stage with wood flooring and lift access, theatrical and suspended lighting systems, and high ceilings accented by vibrant acoustic wall panels and exposed structural trusses. Clerestory windows, currently covered with window covering, have potential to enhance daylighting.
The adjoining kitchen supports an active culinary program and includes stainless steel work surfaces, multiple sinks, and a dedicated delivery entrance.
The administration area, converted from a former classroom, houses the main office, principal’s office, and reception. The interior finishes are in fair to poor condition.
The wellness classroom adjacent to the main office offers soft seating, rugs, and décor to support restorative practices. It includes ample built-in storage and a private office for meetings or counseling.
Finishes
Overall, interior and exterior finishes are in fair to poor condition. Exterior stucco is cracked and stained, asphalt paving is worn, signage is faded, and shading is limited. Portable exteriors show weathering typical of their age.
Interior finishes, including carpet, VCT, vinyl wall coverings, and acoustic ceilings are dated and show significant wear. Corridors and restrooms exhibit worn and stained surfaces with localized damage. While classrooms retain functional casework, furnishings and finishes no longer meet contemporary standards for 21 century learning and flexibility.
Perimeter portables maintain compliant walkways and ramps, though exterior finishes and signage require improvement.
In general, conditions reflect ongoing aging and deferred maintenance throughout the campus.
