Existing Site Conditions

Ascencion Solorsano Middle School is organized around a central outdoor quad, with permanent classroom buildings arranged in a radial configuration connected by concrete walkways. Planter areas with mature trees and outdoor seating are distributed throughout the site. The administration building is located east of the quad, with the main entrance oriented toward the parking and drop-off zone at Grenache Way and Syrah Drive. The library sits opposite the administration building, fronting the track and field at the rear of the campus. The multipurpose building, gym, basketball courts, and solar shade structures frame the upper campus, while classroom portables are located along the lower campus perimeter. Additional parking is provided along Grenache Way and Syrah Drive. Overall, the campus is in good condition and offers opportunities for enhanced outdoor learning and gathering spaces.

Site & Outdoor Areas

The campus features a concentric circulation layout, with classroom buildings and shared facilities connected by a system of concrete walkways, planted areas, and shaded seating. Large solar panel structures provide shade to the outdoor eating area near the multipurpose building and athletics. Outdoor athletic facilities include a track-and-field and multiple basketball courts; however, these areas receive minimal shade. The main field experiences recurring gopher activity, uneven grading, and irrigation issues that contribute to unsafe conditions. The gravel track suffers from erosion, leading to poor drainage and slippery surfaces.

Temporary aluminum bleachers are used for events but are unstable and require replacement. Despite the site’s landscape features, large portions of outdoor pathways and gathering areas lack adequate shade. Perimeter parking along Grenache Way and Syrah Drive sufficiently supports school operations.

The campus-wide signage is inconsistent and presents challenges for wayfinding and emergency response. The security system is not fully operational and would require the addition of new cameras.

Administration Building

The administration building fronts the primary drop-off area at Grenache Way and Syrah Drive. Visitors approach through a landscaped entry with shade, seating, and a covered walkway. Inside, the reception area is divided between administration and student services, with a centrally located nurse’s office. Adjacent spaces include faculty workrooms, offices, restrooms, storage, and a large staff lounge with access to a private outdoor patio. Casework and workstation furnishings are coordinated in color, though some furnishings appear dated. Overall, the administration building is in good condition and adequately supports campus operations.

Classroom Buildings and Portables

Five main classroom buildings are located near the center of campus, with portables, a music classroom, and a multimedia lab positioned along the southern edge. Buildings feature deep roof overhangs and perimeter windows. Classrooms are brightly decorated with individualized color schemes. In the science classrooms, prep/ storage rooms are shared between two classrooms.

Interiors include a combination of carpet and vinyl flooring, tackable wall panels, casework storage, and heavy furnishings that, while functional, are dated. Portable classrooms contain minimal casework and movable desks, reflecting limited flexibility. The music building offers high ceilings and perimeter casework, with window covering at the front-facing windows. The adjacent multimedia lab is significantly underutilized and currently functions as storage. Overall, classroom facilities are in fair condition but would benefit from been updated.

Multi-Purpose Building

Located on the north side of the campus, the multi-purpose building is accessed through a large outdoor gathering and eating area. The interior features high ceilings, clerestory windows with window covering, acoustic and tackable wall panels, and a stage with theater capabilities. A kitchen occupies the east side of the building, supported by a service driveway from Grenache Way. Locker rooms are located on the west side of the structure and within an adjacent portable; however, these spaces lack restrooms, sinks, and adequate storage, limiting full functionality.

Gym

The gymnasium sits north of the multi-purpose building and includes high ceilings, clerestory windows, retractable bleachers, and indoor courts. The main entrance opens to an interior reception area with large windows and direct restroom access. The west facing side of the gym experience issues with glare which reduce its usability. This could be addressed by adding window covering or tinting. Overall, the gym is well-maintained and in good condition.

Library

The library is situated east of the central quad, opposite the administration building and adjacent to the track and field. In addition to the main library space, the building includes two classrooms, storage areas, restrooms, and faculty workspaces. Dual entrances lead into a central reception desk, opening onto an expansive reading and study area furnished with round tables, seating clusters, and book stacks oriented toward a large bay window that overlooks the quad. Classrooms and support areas are located south of the main reading space. The library features tall ceilings and is in fair condition.

Finishes

Overall, campus finishes range from well-maintained to showing signs of deterioration. Permanent classrooms contain dated materials needing modernization, while portable classrooms show more pronounced wear. Major facilities—the administration building, gym, multi-purpose room, and library—are generally in fair to good condition, with durable finishes but localized issues such as outdated furnishings, glare, and limited storage. Across the campus, interior and exterior finishes remain functional but reflect deferred maintenance and would benefit from targeted upgrades.

Community Engagement Feedback

Specialized Learning Environments
If you could add or improve one specialty space on your school campus, what would it be?
“The portable I am currently in is too small for my students and me. I have students with physical disabilities (wheelchairs) that need to get around the classroom. We need adjustable and flexible seating in the classroom.”
Faculty
“There are too many students crammed into classes and at recesses & lunch times. The schools were not built for the student population explosion. There a no extra rooms to conduct mandated testing in private.”
Parent
“I would standardize the Wellness rooms.”
