Existing Site Conditions

Preschool programs are currently distributed across three sites: Antonio Del Buono (ADB), Glen View, and Rod Kelley State Preschools. The program leadership has expressed a long-term vision to consolidate these programs into a single, comprehensive preschool campus.

A consolidated campus could:

  • Support program integration across all preschool offerings.
  • Improve equity and access, particularly for higher-need communities.
  • Address challenges with special education mainstreaming.
  • Increase operational efficiency and streamline staffing, facilities, and maintenance.

Antonio Del Buono State Preschool serves approximately 60 students in the morning session and 50 students in the afternoon session. While the campus is operational, several facility concerns have been identified that affect safety, comfort, and functionality. The current restroom design, though compliant with licensing requirements, lacks privacy during visits by parents or other guests. To enhance student comfort and maintain appropriate separation, the installation of classroom-accessible restroom doors is recommended.

The playground at Antonio Del Buono State Preschool requires more shade. Existing shade is inconsistent, and replacement of the current structure with modern fabric shade installations matching district standards is advised. Oleander plants within or adjacent to play areas pose a toxic hazard and should be fenced or otherwise blocked from student access. Additionally, playground sprinkler heads are in need of repair to ensure safe and functional irrigation.

Parking and circulation on campus present safety challenges. Vehicles currently cross pedestrian walkways, on-street parking is unavailable, and overall circulation is inefficient. Drop-off and pick-up operations are frequently congested, and reversing traffic flow has been suggested to improve safety. Reconfiguration of the parking lot has been identified as a high-priority improvement to address these circulation issues.

Immediate Needs (0-5 Years)

  • Install classroom-accessible restroom doors to improve privacy for students during parent/visitor presence.

  • Replace existing shade structure with modern fabric shade.

  • Revisit the existing configuration of the parking lot and drop-off/pick-up traffic flow.

Long Term Needs (5-10 Years)

  • Merge Antonio Del Buono, Glen View, and Rod Kelley State Preschools into a single modern preschool campus. Site selection should prioritize proximity to higher-need, low-income families to ensure equitable access. A consolidated campus would enhance:

  • Safety for students and staff.
  • Program equity and inclusion, particularly for special education students.
  • Operational efficiency and staff coordination.
  • Overall facility quality and capacity for future enrollment growth.

Community Engagement Feedback

Mental Health and Social Emotional Needs

If one improvement could be made to help support student mental health and wellness, what would it be?

“I believe the wellness programs are out in a portable. It would be nice to have it more centrally located and in a permanent room rather than a portable.”

“I would love more activities outside of normal school hours to do. One year Ms. Lazono did a yoga/wellness class and the kids raved about it. Would love that again.”
