Existing Site Conditions

The El Roble Elementary School campus is comprised of permanent and portable structures with a complete modernization completed in 2005. Key facilities include an administration building, classroom pods, library, multi-purpose room, cafeteria, and elective labs. Considering their growing enrollment, current campus conditions are unsatisfactory due to outdated and insufficient classroom, administration, and storage facilities. A major modernization of this site is needed to meet the programmatic needs of this campus.

Site and Outdoor Areas

The campus features blacktop play areas, TK/Kinder and upper-grade play structures, and shade structures located near the quad and basketball courts. The TK/Kinder play structure along 3rd Street is outdated and in poor condition, whereas the upper-grade play structure was upgraded around 2020 and remains in good condition. Sidewalks and blacktop surfaces are uneven due to tree roots, creating accessibility challenges, particularly within the interior quads. Campus fencing has recently been replaced, and solar panels have been installed.
Two parking and drop-off areas are provided—one along 3rd Street and one on Santa Theresa Drive. Overall, parking is limited and insufficient, particularly on the Santa Theresa side. Vehicular traffic on Santa Theresa Drive is congested, unsafe, and lacks ADA-compliant parking spaces. The on-site trash enclosure is poorly located and accessible for public dumping.

Administration Building

The administration building faces the main campus entry and the 3rd Street drop-off, with benches and windows oriented toward the parking lot. The building includes a mural, awning, bicycle racks, and large shade trees. The main entry opens to a reception area and principal’s office, which lacks a direct line of sight to the entry. The staff lounge contains a refrigerator, oven, microwave, and inaccessible casework, serving as both a workroom and lounge. A storage area is located behind the lounge. The nurse’s station faces a side yard and does not include an all-gender restroom. The interior layout is compact and inefficient, lacking adequate office spaces.

Classrooms and Portables

Four main classroom buildings are arranged around the central campus quad, with outdoor corridors and small trees. Each building contains four connected classrooms, two of which are windowless and receive limited natural light. All classrooms are equipped with sinks and air-conditioning units, though these systems are prone to failure. Classroom furniture is aging and heavy. Roofs are in poor condition and require urgent replacement.
Nine portable classrooms are located at the rear of the campus, serving arts/music, overflow storage, small-group programs, and resource/intervention programs. While the portable classrooms are newly furnished, they were installed in 2004 and are deteriorating, with ongoing pest issues.

Building M – Multi-Purpose Room, Library, Kitchen

Constructed in 2004, Building M houses a central multi-purpose room with stage, a library, and a kitchen. The multi-purpose room features high acoustic wall and ceiling panels, suspended LED fixtures, and foldable lunch tables that recess into the walls. The stage includes curtains, a projection screen, and an accessible lift. The library is furnished with heavy book stacks, a librarian’s desk, tables, and flexible seating ottomans, supporting traditional reading, class visits, and Chromebook storage in an adjacent computer lab. The kitchen is in good condition. Overall, Building M is the newest and best-maintained building on campus.

Finishes

Overall, the interior and exterior finishes of main classrooms are in moderate condition. Finishes at all portables are in poor condition.

Community Engagement Feedback

Mental Health and Social Emotional Needs

If one improvement could be made to help support student mental health and wellness, what would it be?

“I believe the wellness programs are out in a portable. It would be nice to have it more centrally located and in a permanent room rather than a portable.”

Student
“I would love more activities outside of normal school hours to do. One year Ms. Lazono did a yoga/wellness class and the kids raved about it. Would love that again.”
Student

“I think we need to start helping students seek out mental health help at younger ages. I think the need for this type of help is grossly underestimated and underprovided at the elementary level.”
